Review: Resident Evil Revelations is a Return to the Franchise’s Roots

By: Spyro

Graphically, it’s the best looking game on the Nintendo 3DS and its cinematic quality rivals console Resident Evil titles, but the game’s somewhat wonky control scheme and rampant glitches threaten to ruin the title.

It manages to mix the more action oriented gameplay of recent Resident Evil titles with the bullet counting survival horror of older titles that many fans have come to recognize the franchise for. This gives the game a very nostalgic feel. In many ways, it’s very similar to some of the first titles in the franchise. At times the game is extremely difficult, ammo is scarce and enemies (called Ooze) are abundant, but then other missions are a breeze to complete. This makes the overall difficulty level somewhat unbalanced.

Resident Evil Revelations is amazing looking and it truly proves what the 3DS is capable of creating graphically. It adopts a third person perspective that features, beautiful lighting effects and environments filled with intricate details. Its eerie soundtrack is equally impressive and features the best sound effects and appropriately atmospheric music I’ve ever heard in a handheld title

In the end, Resident Evil Revelations offers a solid experience, one that rivals that of full-fledged console games in the franchise. If you’re able to overlook the game’s many glaring flaws, underneath you’ll find a relatively solid survival horror game.

Review: Mass Effect 3 is Set to Impress

By: Spyro

As the third and final title in the critically acclaimed Mass Effect franchise, Mass Effect 3 has a lot to live up to.

If the recently released single and multiplayer demo is an indication of how the rest of the game will play, fans of the series have nothing to worry about.

In some ways, the Mass Effect series’ evolution has been somewhat strange. The franchise began as a classic role-playing game, in the vein of Bioware’s previous critically acclaimed franchise, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Then came Mass Effect 2, a sequel that in some ways had more in common with the Gears of War series, than the original Mass Effect. Mass Effect 2 streamlined and simplified the first title’s role-playing elements and also introduced third person shooter-oriented cover mechanics and scripted story sequences.

"New Writers Down in Fraggle Rock"

First thing's first, the top story. Fraggle is a great lover, but he learned it from arguably one of the best of 80's TV programs. Co-writers Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian are now set to write the screenplay for New Regency's Fraggle Rock, based on the Jim Henson puppet show from the 1980s. A feature adaptation of the series has been in the works for many years across numerous studios, but the franchise was eventually picked up by New Regency in 2011.

Guild Wars 2 To Host A Second Beta Weekend Next Month

First game business of the week is something for you fellow MMORPG fans. ArenaNeta is apparently sticking to their planned 2012 release, as the second beta weekend begins in June starting June 8 @Noon PT and ending June 10 @11:59pm PT. There has been a rumored release date of June 28 but ArenaNet has yet to announce an official release date. Gamestop has it scheduled for June 26 and Amazon has a scheduled release as June 30. As an added bonus, player progress from the game's first beta weekend has been saved, so you'll be able to pick up wherever you left off if you're coming back for more. Repeat players can expect to see a few improvements to the overall Guild Wars 2 experience, with ArenaNet having addressed issues relating to "party movement into overflow servers, chat functionality, key bindings, server stability, performance" and more since the first beta test. You can get in on the beta either by pre-ordering the game or by keeping up with ArenaNet on Facebook and Twitter for giveaways that will be staged in the coming weeks.

The title Need for Speed: Most Wanted was previously used by EA in 2005, but we don't have any details on what this new Most Wanted might be. Any announcements about Need for Speed: Most Wanted will likely come during EA's press conference, which will take place on Monday, June 4th at 1:00 p.m. PST.

Dust 514

Dust 514 is a free-to-play first-person shooter that's being incorporated into the EVE universe, acting essentially an action MMO for consoles. The game offers a mix of first-person shooting and real-time strategy gameplay where you play as a marine with a rifle running around on the ground. It's not only set in the EVE universe, it's actually connected to EVE. The Dust battlefields will determine who controls territory within EVE's world. The EVE Online players will have to contract players of Dust to go in and destabilize territory. Release date is set for the second quarter of 2012 expecting a summer release.

First News of the New Skyrim DLC Titled Dawnguard

Bethesda’s first major expansion to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is apparently all about vampires. The first real details about Dawnguard come from the reveal trailer, which shows quite a bit more than the piercing, glowing eyes of the Dovakiin character model Bethesda has been using for marketing.

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim: Dawnguard – Official Trailer

The trailer shows a vampire castle containing eldritch devices and a pinch-faced, ember-eyed NPC who is very serious about discovering your intentions. At one point the trailer shows a transformation scene where you morph into a vampiric monster. This seems to indicate that you’ll have to choice to either quest for this vampire faction or against it. The opposition force is the Dawnguard, based in a new castle, who hunt vampires and try to prevent the undead blood hoarders from blotting out the sun with their villainy. Because regular vampires just aren’t exciting anymore, Bethesda will allow you to transform into a grotesque winged demon creature in Dawnguard. Movement will be a little floatier than normal if the footage is indicative of actual gameplay, and you’ll be able to move at high speeds across the landscape. Perhaps you can switch between the monster form and your standard body at will, or perhaps you can only exist as a monster during specific moments during the quest line. There's finally a freaking crossbow. Bethesda is also adding at least one more horse. A ghostly horse with a mane of blue flame. Also after Dawnguard, dragons will no longer be confined to land and air – they can dive directly through the ice in combat. It's not yet known as to what they do down in the ice but it's most likely to regenerate health or to bust out of the ice below you. There will be more enemies like an Ice Giant and a new Elder Scroll will be included as to play a prominent role in Dawnguard’s story. Later the scroll is opened, and a flash of a modified map of Skyrim that shows the highlighted cities of Markarth and Solitude with reddish symbols. I don't know about you guys but i can't wait to munch on veins and be burnt like a chip in the sun.

Mounted Combat Coming to Skyrim

Bethesda is adding mounted combat in its 1.6 update. You can actually check this feature out right now if you own the PC version and opt into the Steam beta update. Sadly for console players there’s no timeframe yet for consoles, but Bethesda said on its blog that 1.6 will show up for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 eventually. Other additions and fixes include kill cam adjustments and, on Xbox 360, issues with Kinect features. Also, it seems as though Bethesda has finally addressed the dreaded nirnroot lighting glitches, so we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

Shadow of the Colossus Movie

Whether you've heard about it or not, Sony has been quietly developing Shadow of the Colossus for several years now although the script is still being written. Chronicle director Josh Trank has signed on to helm the movie. Trank is also working on Venom and Fantastic Four movies and an adaptation of the comic Red Star. Will it be another failure of a game adapted to the big screen, or will it put an end to the curse of video game movies? Hopefully sometime in the next 10 years we will find out.

AMC Airing Walking Dead: Season 3 Preview in July

AMC announced The Walking Dead Season 3 Preview Weekend which kicks off a two-day marathon featuring all 19 episodes from the series first two seasons. This will culminate with a Talking Dead live primetime special, followed by the world television premiere of the black and white version of The Walking Dead pilot. The Walking Dead Preview Weekend airs Saturday, July 7 and Sunday, July 8 beginning at 11:30am each day.
